Using empirical data from two accompanying research projects, we investigate how concepts diffract (fragment or change under the influence of cultural and social factors) in the context of participatory technology development by addressing these questions:

  1. What role do social and cultural dimensions play in the collection, analysis, and use of data within participatory projects?
  2. What role do trust, stereotypes, hidden assumptions, and attributions play?
  3. How does knowledge influence the perception and utilization of the technology’s potential?  The paper aim to discuss how involving potential users and their knowledge in technology development can broaden the concept of sustainability.
